Press PgDn or Enter to continue. WEAPON SELECTION AND LOADING In addition to the chin turret machine gun, your helicopter has two hardpoints. Press the up or down cursor keys to highlight the hardpoint you want to change. Press the spacebar to put a check mark next to the weapon you want. Press PgDn or Enter to continue. WAYPOINT MAP In your helicopter, the map numbers your waypoints in the approach order. Be sure to end your mission at the last waypoint. DEBRIEFING When you land at your destination airport, the mission ends and you're returned to the ready room for debriefing. To end the mission unsuccessfully and await rescue, press Ctrl-Q. CHANGING YOUR VIEW ANGLE Press the arrow keys on the keypad to change the direction you're looking out the cockpit. (Keyboard users: hold down the Ctrl key while pressing the keypad keys.) This lets you see in different directions, which is useful for spotting and targeting enemies. The crosshair in the center of the Head Up Display (HUD) shows you the direction your helicopter is pointed. If you have a target lock and you change views, you lose your lock. CHANGING YOUR VIEW PERSPECTIVE There are many different view perspectives, some from outside of your helicopter. See the "View" menus for a complete list of views and keyboard commands. TAKEOFF To take off, increase the throttle and pull up on the collective. Press 5 to open the throttle to 100% engine power and increase your collective to maximum. When your upward thrust exceeds 50%, you take off. The controls are calibrated so you hover when you maintain your thrust at 50% of maximum. Press 3 to reduce your throttle and collective to achieve 50% thrust. Press G after taking off to retract your landing gear. FLYING To move forward, push the flight stick forward. To move backward, pull it back. Move it side to side to fly side to side. Notice that moving your flight stick left or right moves your helicopter left and right without turning. To turn, you must also use the rudders. TURNING To bank right, move your flight stick forward and to the right. To bank left, move the flight stick forward and left. ROTATING When your aircraft is hovering, hold down Alt and move your flight stick right to rotate right, left to rotate left. Hold down Alt and move the flight stick backward to tilt your nose up, forward to tilt the nose down. Release Alt to return your helicopter to hover. NAP OF THE EARTH (NOE) FLYING There's only one way to fly a dozen miles over enemy territory without using all your weapons in self-defense before you reach your target, and that's to fly low as possible, and hide behind objects. LANDING Press G to lower the gear or you'll crash. The symbol GEAR is visible in the upper right corner of your HUD if your landing gear is down. To Land, hover over the landing spot, reduce your thrust below 50% by pressing 2 or 6, and gently touch down. If you land at the destination airport (your last waypoint) you automatically return to HQ for your debriefing. NAVIGATION Your list of waypoints is available on a Multi-Function Display (MFD), and it's visible when you first enter your helicopter. The highlighted waypoint is your first destination. Beneath the waypoint name is its relative distance and bearing. The direction is shown in degrees on a circle, with positive degrees to the right, negative degrees to the left. At the top of the HUD in your cockpit window is a compass. Under this compass is an arrow that points in the direction of your highlighted waypoint. Steer your helicopter so the arrow is lined up with the center tick mark of the compass, and you're flying directly toward your next waypoint. COUNTERMEASURES When an enemy spots you, the appropriate Search light comes on, telling you if the search is by radar or infrared. If an enemy starts tracking you, the appropriate Tracking light comes on, telling you if the track is by radar or infrared. Turn on your jammers to scramble the enemy's target lock; I for the infrared jammers, or R for the radar jammers. If the enemy fires a guided missile at you, the appropriate Guidance light comes on, telling you if the target lock is on your radar or infrared signature. If it's a radar lock, quickly dump chaff by pressing C. If it's an infrared lock, quickly drop a flare by pressing F. If your countermeasures are successful, the color of the missile on your RWR changes. WEAPON TARGETING AND FIRING Select your weapon by pressing [ or ]. The name of the selected weapon appears on your HUD in the lower left corner. Press Enter to track the first available target on the left. Repeatedly pressing Enter cycles through all the available targets from left to right, and then it starts over again on the left. If you have a target in your MFD camera view, and you want to return that instrument display to your waypoint list, press the key that changes that MFD. When you're tracking a target, a square appears over it on your HUD. You can only track targets in your field of vision, though you can change your view angle by pressing the cursor keys (keyboard users must press Ctrl and the cursor keys). When the target comes within range of your selected missile, a diamond appears on the tracking square indicating you have a target lock. Guns do not give you a target lock, neither do empty hardpoints. Fire the weapon by pressing the fire button on the control device you're using. FFAR rockets are unguided and fire straight out from your helicopter. Sidewinders and Stingers are fire-and-forget weapons. Hellfires need you to maintain your target lock until they hit. Tows must be steered like an airplane (press F10 for a view of the missile in flight). FLIGHT MENU OPTIONS Bolt-Down Menus are available during flight to let you change various aspects of the simulation. Active options have check marks next to them. Some options can be selected with a keyboard command; these keys appear after the option on the menus in the game. To make a selection: 1. Press Esc to display the Bolt-Down Menus. 2. Press the right or left cursor key to display each menu. 3. Press the up or down cursor key to highlight the option you want to select. 4. Press Enter to select that option. If you decide not to make a selection, press Esc again to hide the Bolt-Down Menus. Please experiment with the menu items, as there is not enough room to explain all of their uses here. In the complete version of this computer simulation, you can also fly an Osprey tilt rotor, an Apache, or a Black Hawk. Many other features and missions are available, and a 120 page manual describes the game, how to fly each helicopter, and tactics required to successfully complete your missions. We welcome you to purchase a copy of LHX Attack Chopper for the complete piloting experience.
