-Introduction:

First off, the folks at Banjo Software would like to pass along a
hardy Thank You for purchasing our product. By doing so, you've
helped us to continue to create new computer realms to explore and
we'll certainly do our very best to insure that your money is well
spent by doing just that. HACX (tm) is the first game from
Banjo Software, a group of highly talented people who are dedicated
to making their mark in the computer gaming community while having
a whole lot of fun doing it. We really hope you enjoy playing
HACX (tm) as much as we enjoyed making it. Thanx!

HACX (tm) is an Add-On game for DOOM II (tm) and it cannot be played
without a registered version of DOOM II (tm). It is required that
Version 1.9 of DOOM II (tm) be used. If you have an earlier version,
see Appendix A: Upgrading DOOM II (tm) to Version 1.9

The registered version of HACX (tm) is DOOM II (tm) compatible,
which means that levels you've designed in the past, as well as new
levels, can easily be made to work with HACX (tm) and, in most cases,
with the same tools that are used now to create DOOM II (tm) add-ons.
In fact, you will find a text file called EDITING.TXT that will contain
important DOOM II (tm) to HACX (tm) conversion information to help make
your life a little easier.

This Registered version is, of course, NOT to be distributed. This is
known as piracy and can cause strange men to enter your bedroom late
at night and make faces at you! ....just before they throw you in jail.

None of the copyrighted material in the Registered version or the
Shareware version is to be distributed with your "custom" creations.
This includes, but is not limited to, graphics, audio sounds and
music, and engine behavior and modifications. Instead, simply
include the phrase "Requires HACX" to any "custom" creations that
are made and distributed.

-File Package:

The files that should appear when you unzip the HX11pack.ZIP package
are as follows:

DHACX.EXE - The source executable
DHSERSET.EXE - Multiplayer Setup
EDITING.TXT - Basic statistics and information for add-on designers
HACX.BIN, .DAT, .EXE, .WAD - Game files and programs
HACX.DEH - The Dehacked source file - optimized for ZDOOM and Legacy
LEGAL_R.TXT - Limited Use Software License Agreement
READMEP.TXT - This file

-Installation:

This package created for those that cannot get the regular installation
package (HACX1_1.ZIP or HACX1_1S.ZIP) to install because of incompatability
with the version of Doom2 being used, i.e. WinDoom, MacDoom, other variations

Simply unzip this package into your current Doom2 setup and see if it
works. Hacx was intended to be used with Doom2 v.1.9. It has not been
thouroughly tested with any other version. Neither Banjo nor Nostromo
will offer support for using the package in this manner ...although the
web site may have more information in the future.

Once installed, simply type HACX to start the game. All of the
startup parameters, codes you are used to using with DOOM II (tm)
will work with HACX (tm). (Note: if you use the -file parameter, it
must be first, ie: HACX -file test.wad -nomonsters is OK, but
HACX -nomonsters -file test.wad is NOT)

The internal cheat codes, that are typed while playing the game,
have been altered, we want you to play the game!

For a complete set of command line codes and parameters, consult
the README.TXT file that comes with DOOM II (tm) or consult the
DMFAQ166 documents, which is easily available from the internet.

-Appendix A: Upgrading DOOM II to Version 1.9

Upgrade patches are widely available for Doom2 and can be picked up
just about anywhere Doom files exist.

The files you will need to use depend on what version of DOOM II (tm)
your currently have. To determine the current version of your game,
start DOOM II (tm) the way you normally would. You'll notice a
colored stripe at the top of the screen. Displayed in this
stripe is the version of your game. (Note: Version 1.666 is actually
Version 1.7)

Once you've determined the version of the game you have, use
the appropriate patch files. Keep in mind that patch files quite
often must be installed in stages. For example, if you have V1.7, you
will first need to run the patch to upgrade it to V1.7a followed by
another patch to upgrade it to V1.9. So, it's important that you
read the text files that come with the patch files carefully
to determine whether you are using the correct patch files.

Installing patches is extremely easy. Included in the patch file
package will be a file called PATCH.ZIP. Unzip this file directly
into your DOOM2 directory. Then go to the DOS prompt for your
DOOM2 directory and type PATCH.

If you've run a previous upgrade patch, you may get a message
during the unzipping process of the next upgrade patch asking if
you wish to overwrite the old patch files. Just tell it "yes".

Note: Patch files can take a considerable amount of time to upgrade
your game. There may be extremely long pauses with seemingly no
activity, except maybe some hard drive activity. This is normal!
Do NOT interupt or abort an upgrade patching process early if
possible.

Happy Gaming!
